These pesky, gross, deadly things are EVERYWHERE and I'm done!
We've killed 8 of them in the last few days, and lucky for us... they've been bigger, way bigger than above picture I stole off the internet! Nice, huh?I guess next time I'll believe the news anchors when they say it's "black widow season". I didn't know there was such a thing, until now!
Since it's not worth having the bug-man come out to spray because spiders can only be killed by direct contact and you can't really kill them by a general spraying. Which means I'm gonna be out on widow patrol until I can rid them of our yard!
Luckily none of them have been inside the house, but 4 in my girls window well, 2 in mine and 2 in the garage is enough to seriously consider buying stock in Raid.
Any suggestions?
(Our contractor's apprentice is here doing some work and as I was preparing myself to kill the latest invader, I showed it to him and he said that's probably the 8th black widow he's seen in his life. I told him "me too, and all 8 I've seen have been in the last 4 days!" Well, there was one in our old house on 300 North in Provo (thanks for the reminder Laura!), but still...
The UPS man also came at the same time, so I showed it to him and he sat there watching it for a minute... until it moved and he ran! I called him a wimp as he jumped in his truck and both of these guys left me to kill the atrocious beast!)

sick!
i know a good method...throw a frying pan at it!
ah, the good ole days. sounds like you've become braver. :)
laura- i SO remember the one under our fridge... so scary! And I don't think I've become braver, necessarily- I just want them away from my kids, so I suck up my fears and spray away! Maybe I will try the frying pan again!
We've had 4 this year. I like the regular four seasons... you know... fall, winter, spring, summer. Forget this black widow season! I just keep the Raid handy. So gross!! I feel your pain.
Ugh, I can So relate to how you feel! Well, looking on the bright side, black widows don't go bolting across the floor without warning or carry babies all over thier backs. :) Good luck with the extermination!
So, just looking at the picture and reading your post gave me the willies! Seriously can't stand spiders and I am WAY impressed that you kill those suckers. Because I would be right there with the UPS man -- running away!!!
Scott and I can relate with the spiders and bugs here in Georgia! Spray around the house and windows with Home Defense (you can get it at Wal-Mart or Home Depot) and it helps keep bugs out of the house. It won't kill the spiders but, it might help keep them from coming in. I bet the construction on the porch stirred them up! You can find us at

BOM them!!! I guess that only works indoors, but it would work in the garage! I hate spiders, and Chris really hates spider, he is a girl when it comes to spiders!
Yuck! I haven't seen any of those around our house, but we've had centipedes. They are all disgusting!
At least you try to kill them to protect your children. When Libby was a baby and we were in Arizona, she was laying on a blanket on the floor and a scorpian comes crawling across the carpet. What do I, oh protecting Mother do? Yell and Kristen and we bolt the room, leaving a 4 month old Libby to fend the thing off by her self.
Yep, Mother of the Year right here!
Gross!!
I have been killing a lot of spiders lately. Yesterday there was a big fat hairy one so I grabbed the zapper. Cooked spider doesn't smell very good.
