Abby & Brenna started swim lessons just over a week ago and as much as I don't think they love it, they're learning and aren't as afraid of the water as they were before we started.
Abby has done great and learning and practicing her different strokes and jumps right in, dunks her head and keeps on going. She's awesome! Brenna did great the first day or so, then one day as she was practicing her kicking with the kick board, I overheard her saying
"I can do this, I know I can, I can really really do it"
as she'd kick her way across the pool and back. I thought it was the sweetest thing, like she was the Little Engine That Could. She told me that Abby told her that she needs to believe in herself and she can do anything, so she remembered that and did it! SO CUTE!
So, the next day comes along and I expected her to have the same positive attitude and guess what???
Did you know that it was opposite day?! I think all I heard her say (other than "stop splashing me Abby") was
"I can't do this, I really can't mom. I can't do it."
UGH! We of course, had a big talk about it and decided that saying "I can't do it" is now a bad word (or bad phrase rather) in our house.
I guess I just haven't been faced with a situation like this yet with my kids, but one thing I now know for sure it that we don't get to give up just because something is hard. Life is hard, but we can come out on top if we stick to it and make the best of each situation! She's done tons better since then, and they are both now ready to swim in Grandma & Grandpa's pool in Las Vegas in a few weeks!

The pool where they are taking lessons is not the Springville sesspool (which is old, smells bad and is just plain groty!), it's a high school kid teaching from his home. It's actually not just a home, it's more on the scale of mansion, unbelievably large, somebody famous should live there, too big to clean kind of home. Their pool is indoors and underground, if that makes sense. The first day we were there, my cousin Megan was with us (wish you were still here Meg- I have no one to talk to anymore!) and as we tried to analyze the placement of everything, we finally figured out while on our way out that the back yard was on the roof of the pool. The pool has a super high ceiling (that is supporting the rope Brenna is swinging on- SUPER COOL!) so that's how I figure it's underground. It's beautiful, and the best part is that there is no cryptosporidium present.

Wow, that's a pretty fancy pool for swim lessons! I'm WAY jealous! Way to go Abby and Brenna on learning how to swim. I'm sure they won't be able to get you out of the pool in Vegas when you visit.
Where or who are they taking from. I had Millie in swim lessons the last two summers in AZ and last summer she could swim across the wide part (not the long ways)of our apartment pool by herself. We went to SF pool last weekend and she would not release the KungFo grip off my neck. So all was lost.
Wow I want to be rich and have a pool like that. Your girls are pretty lucky to be swimming in such a cool pool. I love your girls and there funny ways and I think you are a great mom at banning the phrase I can't do it. I think every family needs to do that. I love that Abby is teaching Brenna to believe in herself. I think you are doing a great job as a mom, Deb. Keep up the good work!
i loved watching the girls tell each other they could do it, so cute! i wish i was still with you that was alot of fun!
